My first two projects as a management consultant were agonizingly boring, which meant that I had time to take a training in robotic process automation (RPA) software. I understood immediately that my project teammates and I were bored because the work we were doing was so routine that it could be automated. Worse still, our clients were bored, too. The worst part for our clients was that spending so much of their day on routine but necessary tasks meant that they had less time to spend on the inherently human parts of their jobs that were actually exciting, interesting, and highly valuable. They were frustrated that they did not have time to provide their customers with the high-quality, personalized service they needed to solve their toughest problems. These highly specialized professionals were bogged down in mundanity.
